Our Stories
Cardiovascular Disease in Africa:
A Growing Crisis
When people think of Africa's health challenges, they often picture infectious diseases – malaria, cholera, Ebola, and most recently, COVID-19. But lurking in the background, and now stepping into the spotlight, is cardiovascular disease (CVD) – a silent but relentless killer.
Kenya alone saw 13% of its 2019 mortality linked to CVDs, according to the Kenya Cardiac Society. The real kicker? There are only 40 cardiologists for 48 million people. That's one cardiologist for every 1.2 million Kenyans, a ratio that wouldn't even work in a well-staffed beehive, let alone a national healthcare system.
